The project is a joint initiative of TravelAid and Upendo Foundation International. Upendo is a Kenyan registered NGO and aims to help the Kenyan people find a Kenyan solution to their problems, which is sustainable and capable of continuous development. Upendo is involved in a range of programs including school support, home based care, microfinance and pre-school education.
2011 will be the third year of this TravelAid project. TravelAid volunteers will devise lessons to deliver to primary and secondary school children at a number of local schools. There will also be an option for TravelAid volunteers to work with teachers to produce more interactive lesson plans, and to assist Upendo with other areas of its work.
Upendo will organise an orientation for the volunteers upon arrival, which will include a tour of the local area, Upendo projects and an outline of the major local development challenges. Volunteers can organise weekend trips to Kendu Bay, Kisumu and Kakamega rainforest.
