Please note that due to both political instability and the threat posed by terrorism we have continued to postpone this project. However, we continue to provide some financial support to our partner organisations and hope to return soon.
Niger is a landlocked, French-speaking country in West Africa. The TravelAid project is based in the capital, Niamey. Niger has a lot to offer tourists; black volcanic mountains, cascading waterfalls, green oases desert cities camels, giraffes, hippos on the river Niger and the beauty of the desert.
Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking near last on the United Nations Development Fund index of human development. In 2008 life expectancy is estimated at 44 years old. Education is only freely available for children aged 8-14, and whilst they are taught English, the teaching is very much grammar-based and to improve their tourist industry, they must develop better English speakers.
