TravelAid volunteers work under the joint direction of TravelAid and our partner in Tanzania, Serian UK. Serian UK is dedicated to preserving indigenous traditions and knowledge, developing culturally appropriate programmes of education and training, and promoting inter-cultural dialogue across the world.

Volunteers live and work at Noonkodin Secondary School. The school is located on a remote plateau, around 90 minutes by car from Arusha. Surrounded by acacia trees, mountains and boasting fantastic sunsets, the location is truly beautiful. Facilities at the school are basic. There is no running water, and although in recent months solar panels have been installed, electricity supply is unreliable.

There are several components to the project.

1. Intensive lessons in science and mathematics.  Volunteers will need to think creatively to bring the subjects to life, with little resources.

2. English teaching: In Tanzania, primary school is taught in Kiswahili medium.  However, students progressing to secondary school are expected to learn all of their subjects in English.  For the students at Noonkodin, English is a third language. For the majority, lack of english is prohibitive to learning across the board.  The role for TravelAid volunteers is to work intensively with struggling students to enhance their english language skills.

3. Coaching form four students: Form four is the highest form at Noonkodin school. After form four, students either complete their education or progress to college.  Some volunteers will work with students who are struggling to help them pass their exams - a form four certificate will significantly enhance job prospects. Other volunteers will work with brighter students, helping them to get the grade they need to secure government funding for college - this could mean the difference between them progressing to college or being unable to continue education.

Serian UK and teachers at the school will provide support and advice for the volunteers during their project. Volunteers will have the chance to participate in a cultural orientation, which will include basic Swahili and Maasai greetings. Serian UK are also able to help volunteers arrange safari and mountaineering expeditions to nearby Kilimanjaro and Meru.
