The project is based in Amritsar, one of the major cities in the state of the Punjab and intrinsically linked to Sikh culture and history. Volunteers work with TravelAid partner organisation UNITED SIKHS.
The project has two components.
For the first component, each TravelAid volunteer will team up with a UNITED SIKHS volunteer. Together, the volunteers will deliver english lessons to students at Standard Public High School, Dhulka. The school is rural and strives to provide a high level education to children of low income families living in the surrounding area. Until TravelAid volunteers first spent time at this school in 2006, the staff and students had not had the opportunity to interact with people from a culture so different from their own. Consequently, TravelAId volunteers spend considerable amounts of time with the students talking about the different cultures of the world and sharing their traditions and customs.
Over the past three years TravelAid has worked with UNITED SIKHS to provide scholarships for talented children from disadvantaged families in rural Punjab. Volunteers will have the chance to tutor the scholarship students supported by TravelAId after school hours.
The second component of the project is based at Khalsa College. TravelAid volunteers will run conversational english classes for the students.
